The Furry Hoarder

Now that Easter week has arrived, it always makes me smile. It brings back memories of our furry hoarder. There are some things you never think about when you get a dog. Hiding Easter baskets effectively is one of them. That is until a bag of chocolate eggs goes missing.

Our crazy dog was a master of stashing. Her exploits were legendary. In addition to hoarding food, she was a blatant thief as well. When she thought she could get away with it. One time, I had just come back from Taco Bell and had arranged my lunch on a paper plate on the kitchen counter. Upon leaving the bathroom, I discovered Skittles creeping into the living room with one of my tacos held gingerly in her mouth, still in the paper wrapper. When I caught her in the act, the look on her face was priceless.

Another time, my wife discovered two donuts artfully stashed between the cushions of our family room couch. This was notable because our hound dog had managed to stuff both donuts (one glazed and one chocolate-covered), deep into the couch without leaving any evidence of her crime. No chocolate, no sugar glaze, nothing. She was an artist.

Getting back to the missing chocolate eggs. My wife swore she had put a whole bag of them in my basket. However, come Easter morning, nothing. I had completely forgotten about them until a couple of months later. One day, as I sat down in my basement recliner, I heard a distinct crinkling noise. I dug deep into the cushions and pulled out the missing bag of chocolate eggs. All I could do was laugh.

Even though our crazy dog has passed on from this world, the memory of her hoarding skills never fails to bring a smile to our faces. Here’s hoping you have a wonderful Easter, and may all of your chocolate eggs be accounted for!

As usual, thank you for taking time out of your busy day to read this article. I hope you will continue to enjoy and follow this blog. Please feel free to share these stories with your family and friends!
